Our History

The Middletown Day Nursery is deeply rooted in the downtown area of Middletown , NY. On March 12, 1912, Mrs. E. Van Dyke Wight opened her home to twenty-one of the City Mission women of Middletown. With genuine concern for their community, particularly it's young children. They decided to create a Day Nursery that would care for children during the parent's work day, particularly those working in factories. Their decision has had a lasting effect on the City of Middletown as well as the surrounding communities. The City Mission donated two rooms and low income parents were invited to enroll children at a cost of 5 cents per week. All children were welcomed in accordance with a firmly established policy of non-exclusion. Mrs. Ambler, the Day Nursery's first Matron, for a weekly salary of $7.50. All other caregivers were volunteers. To meet the ever increasing needs of the community, three classrooms and a full kitchen were added. On May 8, 1975 a dedication ceremony was held to honor the new building. The City Mission had evolvolved from a childcare facility to an early childhood education center.
Medication Administration
Staff have completed First Aid and CPR. They are MAT Certified and able to administer medication with proper documentation.
Partnership
The Center is actively involved with local agencies to provide a more rewarding experience for the children. We have visits from the police and fire departments as well as the supermarkets.
Excellence
We are commited to providing optimal experiences for children and families. We participate in the Child and Adult Care Food Program which ensures that we serve nutritionally balanced and diverse meals.
Leadership
Staff stand out as advocates in early care and learning. They write grant proposals for classroom enrichment and are recipients of a number of STEM grants and professional development scholarships.
